Modern touch to the old classics

Adapting well-known musical numbers with updated texts from the great W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan operettas, Millikin University's Opera Theatre Department is presenting "The Magic Pinafore," Feb. 18-21 in Albert Taylor Theatre, inside Shilling Hall on Millikin's campus.

The Magic Pinafore spoofs both "grand" opera (the Magic Flute in particular) and the current craze for student magicians and the schools they attend.

The story was created by the show's director, Terry Stone, Millikin lecturer of music. "We have borrowed tunes and some of the lyrics from the big three of Gilbert and Sullivan's operettas that lots of people know," Stone said.

Similar to the Gilbert and Sullivan style, the show makes fun of serious operas. "That's why we call it the 'Magic Pinafore,' because it also has some word play and a few notes from Mozart's 'Magic Flute'," Stone said.

Amy Mazzeo, a senior music performance-voice major from Rolla, Mo., will be on stage as Nymphe O'Goodlove. She has performed in other Gilbert and Sullivan productions and understands what to bring to the show. "It is good for someone who might not ever been to an opera," she said.

Millikin University's Opera Theatre department prepares students for professional success through practical experience both onstage and in the classroom. Learning through performance is emphasized in every aspect of the program.
