Millikin University mourns loss of student
It is with deep sadness that I share with you the news of the death of a current Millikin student. First-year student Tariq Mack, 19, from St. Louis, Missouri, passed away unexpectedly on Thanksgiving Day. Tariq was a biology major, a member of the Millikin football program and a resident of Aston Hall. Tariq's family notified Millikin University officials of this tragedy on Thanksgiving Day; however, arrangements were not made until recently.
A private memorial service, with limited space for guests, will take place on Saturday, December 12 at 9 a.m. at Rock of Ages Baptist Church, located at 2426 Union Blvd, St. Louis, MO, 63113.
Condolences and notes to honor Tariq's life may be sent to the attention of his mother, Chaney Anderson, at 10366 Parkman Dr., Apt B, St. Louis, MO, 63123.
The University extends its deepest sympathy to Tariq's family, friends and the entire Millikin community in this time of loss. We are devastated by this news. Please join us in celebrating Tariq's life and lifting his family up in our thoughts and prayers.
"Tariq was the epitome of a Millikin Man. He was a hard working student-athlete who was dedicated to the betterment of his team and community. It is a great loss which will be felt on-campus and off for a long time to come," said Millikin Head Football Coach Dan Gritti.
Dr. Travis Wilcoxen, associate professor of physiological ecology and chair of the Biology Department, taught Tariq and worked with him throughout his time in the EDGE program. "It was a pleasure to have Tariq as a student. He really embraced the new experience of college biology labs and was on a path to success in biology. We are truly saddened that we won't be able to continue along that journey with him," Wilcoxen said.
