Millikin scholarship program among nine nonprofit organizations recognized
The Community Foundation of Macon County (CFMC) recently selected nine nonprofit organizations to receive a total of $234,000 in grants from the CommunityWorks Endowed Fund. Among the 2021 recipients was Millikin University's Long-Vanderburg (LV) Scholars program receiving $10,000.
"As expected, we received several outstanding applications from our area's nonprofits to help fund the important work they are doing in the fields of education and workforce development," said CFMC Director of Strategic Grantmaking Tony Holly. "We look forward to seeing the benefits for our community through the good work made possible through these grants."
In 2005, The Community Foundation of Macon County was one of only 18 initial foundations chosen to receive a CommunityWorks grant from the Grand Victoria Foundation to establish an endowment fund. Through the years, generous donors have added to the fund to meet challenge matches required by that foundation, increasing the endowment fund to more than $6 million.
"CommunityWorks helps provide a coordinated, systems-based approach toward achieving community aspirations," says CFMC President Natalie Beck. "We are grateful to be able to offer these competitive grants annually to our hard-working nonprofit organizations."
The Long-Vanderburg Scholars program at Millikin University recognizes high scholastic achievement among those students who have a demonstrated commitment to diversity, leadership and community service.
The LV Program is named in honor of Millikin's first two African American graduates, Fred Long and Marian Vanderburg. The scholarship is renewable for up to four years as long as the student maintains a 3.0/4.0 cumulative GPA and actively participates in the program.
The benefits of the Long-Vanderburg Scholars program include a $5,000 annual scholarship totaling $20,000 over four years, specialized courses designed to foster cultural, identity and leadership development, participation in the LV Scholars Freshman Summer Leadership Academy, residences in exclusive Living Learning Communities, contribution to impactful service projects and participation in distinctive LV programs and activities focused on preparing scholars for success.
