Millikin student finds her place

When she decided to attend Millikin University, Mt. Zion (Ill.) resident Chloe Hugo never imagined the broad scope of unique experiences she would have at her hometown university. Now a junior nursing major, she feels ready to conquer the world with the professional and interpersonal skills she learned at Millikin.

During her college search, Hugo's mother, a Millikin alumna, persuaded her to put Millikin on her list of schools to visit and consider.

"She was always in my head saying, 'it's a good school and you should look at it … it's a good school for the field you want to pursue.'" Hugo said of her mom's influence.

Throughout her life, Hugo continually admired the work of nurses and realized her passion for helping others.

Reflecting on seeing loved ones being cared for in times of need, Hugo said, "I knew as soon as I saw the process behind making others healthy and curing their conditions, I wanted to be a part of that someday and help thousands of other people get through such hard times."

After visiting and meeting faculty members from the School of Nursing, Hugo knew Millikin was the institution that would help prepare her for her long-awaited nursing career. Although she was already passionate about nursing, Hugo says that Dr. Gail Fyke, assistant professor of nursing, further sealed her decision to choose Millikin.

"She was one of my biggest supporters and cheerleaders of going to Millikin and pursuing nursing. I'm so very grateful that she helped me make this choice to come here and pursue nursing," Hugo said.

During her time on campus, Hugo is gaining knowledge to thrive in both her career and her life after graduation and expressed that she was happy with her decision to give Millikin a chance. Once she stepped foot onto campus, she knew Millikin's environment would benefit her both academically and socially.

"I knew I would thrive here as an individual and a student."

As a member of several organizations on campus, including sorority Delta Delta Delta, Hugo stays active in her on-campus endeavors while still being close by for family events and having the support of home.

"Being close to home and having my family close by has been very impactful," Hugo said. "I enjoy that I can still keep up with their lives while still having a life at Millikin."
