Millikin University has named Dr. John Storsved the new chair of the Department of Exercise Science and Sport (ESS) and director of the Athletic Training program.
An associate professor of exercise science, Dr. Storsved comes to Millikin after spending six years at Eastern Illinois University where he served as an associate professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Sports Studies, as coordinator of clinical education in the athletic training program, and served as the graduate program coordinator during the 2015-16 academic year. He previously held academic positions at Illinois State University, Purdue University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
"I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to join the Millikin University faculty," Dr. Storsved said. "I'm very excited to be a part of such a dynamic and growing department and look forward to the upcoming academic year."
Dr. Storsved has been certified by the Board of Certification and National Athletic Trainers Association for 25 years. He spent 12 years (2000-2011) as a per diem athletic trainer for Carle Sports Medicine in Urbana, Ill., providing athletic health care to local high school athletic departments. Dr. Storsved also serves as an accreditation site visitor for the Commission on Accreditation in Athletic Training Education (CAATE).

"His arrival is a very important step forward in the continued work to expand and strengthen the excellent work of the faculty, staff and students in the Department of Exercise Science and Sport. We're very glad and excited to welcome him as a new faculty colleague and member of the Millikin community."
One of Dr. Storsved's main initiatives within the Department of Exercise Science and Sport will be leading the transition of the Athletic Training program from a bachelor's degree level to a master's degree, which has been mandated by the national accrediting body.
"I am thrilled to have Dr. Storsved join the Millikin community. Quite simply, he has the skill set necessary to advance the exciting curricular initiatives which lie ahead for Exercise Science and Sport," said Dr. Deborah Slayton, dean of the College of Professional Studies at Millikin. "His experience in graduate education and his service as a peer reviewer for the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education site visits will serve the University well in moving those initiatives forward."
Dr. Storsved earned a Bachelor of Arts in Health from Luther College (Decorah, Iowa) in 1990. He earned a Master of Science in Athletic Training in 1991 and a Doctor of Health and Safety in 1996 from Indiana University Bloomington.
Originally from Hendrum, Minn., Dr. Storsved and his wife, Anne, live in Champaign, Ill., with their three children, Ben (18, freshman at Miami of Ohio University), Kate (15) and Luke (12). The family are members of Faith United Methodist Church in Champaign. Dr. Storsved just completed his 4th year as a leader on the church's annual mission trip through Appalachian Service Project.
Dean Slayton noted, "Dr. Storsved has a strong academic, administrative and professional background and has already demonstrated in his short time on campus that he is someone for whom interdisciplinary outreach and making personal connections is second nature."
The Department of Exercise Science and Sport at Millikin University prepares professionals to provide leadership for fitness and sport activities, manage in the sport industry, provide care for athletes and teach physical education in a school setting. ESS majors allow graduates to receive the education they need to become certified and/or licensed in diverse fields.
