Millikin University's student-run theatre company Pipe Dreams Studio Theatre is presenting "Nevermore: The Imaginary Life and Mysterious Death of Edgar Allan Poe." Haunting music and poetic storytelling combine to tell the fascinating life of the iconic American writer.
"Poe's stories are very haunting," said director Joel Kimling, a senior theatre major from Cincinnati, Ohio. "This is a theater version of a haunted house."
Poe struggles with tragedy, poverty and loss, and yet produces some of the world's most original, visionary and enduring literature before dying by unexplained circumstances at the age of 40. "Nevermore" explores the events that shape Poe's character and career, blurring the line between fact and fiction.
"When we tell the story of his life we are all playing the various people," said Maggie McMurran, who takes on three roles as Player Four. McMurran is a junior theatre major from Decatur, Ill.
The entire show is set to music, with many of Poe's poems and stories used as the lyrics and basis for the story. "The entire show is also done in tetrameter, which is the style he wrote all of his poems in," Kimling said.
Kimling noted, "There are a lot of things that if you're not paying attention, you might miss the first time."
