The Millikin volleyball team defeated Carroll University 3-0 to give the Big Blue its second straight College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) regular season championship on Nov. 1 at the Griswold Center in Decatur, Ill.
The Millikin victory coupled with Elmhurst College's 3-0 loss at Illinois Wesleyan gave the Big Blue sole possession of the conference title at 7-1 with Elmhurst falling to 6-2. Millikin will be the number one seed and host the CCIW Tournament.
Millikin started slow in the first set, but pulled out to a 25-22 victory. Millikin controlled the next two sets winning 25-15 and 25-16. Junior Alora Goodey, an elementary education major from Lincoln, Ill., led Millikin with nine kills followed by junior Erin Syversen with eight. Syversen, a sports management emphasis major from Pewaukee, Wis., added three service aces.
Emily Mihalkanin, a senior biology major from Willowbrook, Ill., had 30 set assists, seven kills and three service aces. Senior Kelsey Talkington, a graphic design major from North Aurora, Ill., had six kills and two aces. Cassidy Kingery, a nursing major from Heyworth, Ill., celebrated Senior Night with a team high 18 digs, while Cortney Bohn, a sophomore elementary education major from Mahomet, Ill., and Emily Seegmiller, a sophomore health, fitness and recreation major from Arthur, Ill., each had seven kills for Millikin. Carroll was led by Dana Voltolina with 13 kills.
The CCIW Tournament will begin on Friday, Nov. 4 at 4:30 p.m. at the Griswold Center with second seeded Elmhurst College facing third seeded Wheaton College. Millikin will play fourth seeded Carthage College at 7 p.m. The CCIW Championship match will be played Saturday, Nov. 5 at 2 p.m.
