Students from Millikin University's Children's Literature course in the School of Education have been planning literacy events during the spring semester at French Academy, a local elementary school in Decatur, Ill.

The students recently organized an African American Read-In on Feb. 25 for kindergarten through fifth grade students. The National African American Read-In is celebrated each February during Black History Month by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and the Black Caucus of NCTE to highlight books written by and about African Americans.

The Children's Literature course, led by Dr. Ngozi Onuora, Millikin assistant professor of education, explores literature that teaches a diverse worldview and addresses a variety of contemporary and historical social issues.

Among the student organizers was Madeline Morthland, a sophomore elementary education major from Decatur. "It was fun having an excuse to read children's books," she said.

The students will be hosting an event titled Read Across America on Thursday, March 3. Read Across America is nationally sponsored by the National Education Association to motivate children to read.
