Read Across America Day, also known as Dr. Seuss Day, was recently celebrated on Wednesday, March 2. The idea behind Read Across America Day is to raise awareness and motivate children in every community to read.
Student-athletes from the Millikin University Baseball team took time on March 2 to visit Stevenson Elementary School in Decatur, Ill., to read to students.
"We like to get out into the community and help out the kids and they really get excited when we come and visit," said Kaleb Krigbaum, a junior health, fitness & recreation major from Cerro Gordo, Ill.
The National Education Association's (NEA) Read Across America Day is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss.
NEA's Read Across America also provides NEA members, parents, caregivers and children the resources and activities they need to keep reading on the calendar 365 days a year.
"Academics and athletics are both important," said coach Eric Ignatowski, Millikin assistant baseball coach. "But so is community involvement, and bringing the players into the school to read to and interact with children gives them an outward focus on their responsibilities as good citizens."
