Shields: Summer is time to reflect, improve

Summer is a good time to reflect on the processes and tools that startups and entrepreneurs use to be productive says Julie Shields, director of the Center for Entrepreneurship at Millikin University.

In the June 2017 issue of the Business Journal of Midcentral Illinois, Shields offers insight into how entrepreneurs can carve out enough time for self-reflection, process improvement and increased efficiency.

"When someone is in a state of flow most of the year, working toward launching a new venture or product, it is all too easy to just keep doing what they've always done," said Shields. "It's important to actively take time to reflect on what isn't working. And summer is as good a time as any in the temperate Midwest."

When something isn't working with a current venture or project Shields says to write those things down as a stream of consciousness and getting external feedback is critical.

"Break your typical cycle so that your mind is ready to hear what your mentor has to say," said Shields. "And if you pair it with things you wish you had the time to do anyway, you have leveled-up on productivity."

Shields added, "Spend some time this summer looking at new technologies if you like being on the bleeding edge, or considering how to incorporate some more seasoned technologies into your productivity process if you are a lagging adopter of technology."
