Millikin student-athletes recognized for academic achievements

Several Millikin University student-athletes were recently honored for their academic achievements including Erin Lukens, a sophomore from Johnston City, Ill., who earned a United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic honor for the 2016-17 track & field season.

To qualify for USTFCCCA All-Academic honors, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.30 and must have met at least one of the following athletic standards: Competed in an NCAA Indoor or Outdoor Championship; or finished the regular season ranked in the national Top 50 in an individual event or ranked in the national Top 35 in a relay event on the official NCAA Descending Order List.

Lukens ranked in the Top 50 nationally in the 400 Meters and excelled in the classroom as a biology (pre-physical therapy) major.

Millikin University men's golfers were among those honored with the announcement of the Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars from the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).

Blake Davis, a senior business management major from Fairfield, Ill.; David Gerig, a junior business management major from Towanda, Ill.; and Cole Sondgeroth, a senior from Bloomington, Ill., all qualified for the All-America Scholar honor.

To be eligible for Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 50 percent of his team's competitive rounds, have a stroke-average under 76.0 in Division I, 78.0 in Division II, 78.0 in NAIA and 79.0 in Division III, and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade point average of 3.20. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.

The Millikin men's and women's tennis teams and nine Big Blue tennis student-athletes were honored by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) with the announcement of the 2017 All-Academic Teams and Scholar-Athletes.

The Millikin men's and women's teams both qualified as All-Academic Teams and three Millikin women's players and six Big Blue men's players were named Scholar Athletes.  

The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All varsity letter winners were factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2016 and spring 2017).

In order to earn ITA Scholar Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: Be a varsity letter winner; have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year; and have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters (including freshman through senior year).

Morgan Bettner, a junior mathematics (secondary education) major from Brownsburg, Ind.

Mackenzie Martin, a junior biology (pre-optometry) major from Paris, Ill.

Madeline Delano, a junior sports management major from Arlington Heights, Ill.

Colin Sandgren, a junior psychology major from Forsyth, Ill.

Jacob Hamilton, a junior chemistry major from Swansea, Ill.

Connor Sacks, a senior sports management major from Schaumburg, Ill.

Greg Schwoeppe, a junior information systems major from Fishers, Ind.

Tom Emola, a senior information systems major from Frankfort, Ill.

Ryan Sikora, a junior mathematics (actuarial science) major from Hickory Hills, Ill.
