Millikin University expanded over century in Decatur
In a recent editorial from the Herald & Review, the Decatur, Ill., newspaper listed reasons why the Decatur region is loved; among those reasons is Millikin University.
Millikin is an independent, four year university that is privately funded and has an enrollment of approximately 2,000 students in traditional and non-traditional undergraduate and graduate degree programs.
Since its founding more than 110 years ago, Millikin has operated under the philosophy of providing an education that combines theory with practice. The signature of a Millikin education is a unique experience called Performance Learning.
Millikin includes the Tabor School of Business, the Leighty-Tabor Science Center, Kirkland Fine Arts Center and the renowned School of Music in the Perkinson Music Center. Millikin has a 99 percent success rate placing graduates in employment or graduate schools within six months of graduation.
Today's students must perform their knowledge in order to be truly prepared for a successful career after college. Through immersive experiences such as internships, co-teaching, running a business, presenting research to experts, and performing in front of audiences – Millikin students find new ways to live out their learning and reap the rewards of their hard work.
Additional Performance Learning projects on Millikin's campus include work on treatment methods for Breast Cancer, the Center for Entrepreneurship's work with the Food Innovation Challenge and continuing relationship with National Foodworks Services and information systems students creating a data system for maintaining better records on the homeless population in Decatur.
The university has also developed a partnership with Decatur's schools, notably Dennis School, that allows both pre-service teachers and other students to work in classrooms with students, and has offered students internships with the city's businesses and industries.
