Patrick Kinas '92, the Voice of the Durham Bulls
A childhood dream to the "Voice of the Bulls," Millikin University alumnus Patrick Kinas '92 has developed quite a career as a sports broadcaster, spanning ver 30 years. During those years, Kinas has called many sporting events, including the Summer Olympics in Rio, but his passion has always been baseball. Kinas is currently in his sixth year of being the radio voice for the Durham Bulls, a Triple-A minor league affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays.
In a recent interview with the Herald-Sun, Kinas describes his broadcasting style as "down the center as best I can. A good play is a good play."
Kinas earned his bachelor's degree from Millikin in 1992, majoring in communication. While at Millikin, he served as the radio voice of the Millikin Big Blue football and basketball teams. Kinas was also an all-conference tennis player while at Millikin and was named a Volvo Academic All-American. Kinas holds the Millikin all-time school record for singles, double and career victories.
Kinas began his career broadcasting baseball games for the Clinton (Iowa) LumberKings in 1993 followed by the Kane County Cougars in 1997. He joined the Carolina Mudcats minor league baseball team as the radio play-by-play announcer before the 1999 season and held that post for 12 seasons.
Kinas is currently the president of Play-By-Play Sports Properties (PBPSP), an emerging sports marketing and broadcast production company currently working in College Football, Professional Baseball, College Baseball and innovative new forms of digital broadcast distribution.
In 2009, he founded the Triangle Sportscaster Camp (TSC), an intensive, three-day broadcast experience held each July for area junior high through college-aged youths interested in the world of sports broadcasting.
"I love words," said Kinas. "I'm always thinking of phrases."
