Millikin University's student-run theatre company Pipe Dreams Studio Theatre is kicking off its 2017-2018 production season with "The Undeniable Sound of Right Now." The production brings hilarious and heartbreaking to life as main character Hank struggles to keep his legendary rock club going amid changing times and changing tastes. But when his daughter, Lena, starts dating a rising-star DJ, Hank must contend with the destructive power of the "Next Big Thing." The show is directed by Taylor Blaze Lindemann, a senior theatre major from Oak Lawn, Ill.

"There are references to major bands that played there, then became famous soon after," Lindemann said in a recent interview with the Herald & Review.

Music is a fundamental part of the show. Author Laura Eason references Chicago-based bands as part of the story. Lindemann believes the music is a big draw for this play, written only two years ago.

"It is very easy to connect with and to engage with, because of the subject matter," Lindemann said.

Marielle Tepe, a senior theatre major from Harlan, Iowa, who plays Lena, sees the conflict between the generations of the time. "That was the dichotomy between rock and DJing and house parties." Tepe said.

Members of the cast believe Pipe Dreams Theatre is a fitting environment for this type of play and the story that it tells.

"There is really nothing better than the black box setup where the audience is right there with you," said Benjamin Brawner, a senior theatre major from Oswego, Ill., who plays Hank. "You are always trying to get an intimacy with the audience, no matter the stage. Every detail is caught."

The show runs Sept. 22 – Oct. 8. General public tickets are $11-12 and $7-9 for Millikin University students. For more information about Pipe Dreams Studio Theatre and upcoming performances, visit pdtheatre.org.
