Dennis Elementary School students visited Leighty-Tabor Science Center on the campus of Millikin University on April 19 to engage in the study of plants and their life cycles. The students also visited the greenhouse on top of Leighty-Tabor Science Center and the center's museum which houses the final passenger pigeon as well as other taxidermied birds, fish and other creatures.

"We had a variety of different things that they were doing," said Dr. Judy Parrish, Millikin professor of biology. "They were dissecting flowers and bean seeds to really look closely at flowers and see the little baby plant within the seed. Many people, not just little children, have no idea how seeds grow or what a seed is. They looked closely at the seed and then at the flower."

Dennis students, as part of the school's project-based learning focus and the partnership with Millikin for the lab school concept, visit the campus regularly.

Several Millikin undergraduates led four stations during the visit to Leighty-Tabor Science Center, including two classrooms where Dennis students studied stomata, flowers and beans.
